If you’re exploring mantrailing training in Cheshire, you may quickly encounter a confusing mix of qualifications, assessments, levels and acronyms. Many handlers ask: Which system is best? Which one should I follow? And do I even need assessments at all?
As an independent mantrailing instructor in Cheshire, originally trained with The Canine School of Trailing (TCSOT), my goal is to help dog owners make informed, confident decisions based on clear facts.
This article offers a transparent, side‑by‑side comparison of the main UK assessment frameworks available to amateur mantrailing handlers, including:
The Canine School of Trailing (TCSOT)
Mantrailing Global (MTG)
UK Scent Sport (UKSS)
It explains what each system offers, how they differ, and which may best suit your dog, your goals and your lifestyle.
Update 19th February 2026: On 15th February 2026, UK Scent Sport (UKSS) announced that they will be known as United Canine Scent Sport (UCS). This article was published slightly earlier, so we'll keep an eye out for changes and update if needed! Until then, all references to UKSS in this article now refer to UCS.

What Do Mantrailing Qualifications Mean in the UK?
In the UK, there is no nationally regulated qualification for amateur mantrailing handlers. Instead, assessments and levels are set internally by training organisations. These can provide:
Clear progression pathways
Motivation and structure
Personal goals
Confidence building
However, they are not legal requirements, nor do they create operational search dogs. For most handlers, assessments should support learning, welfare and enjoyment, not pressure. You only need to do them if it's important to you!
The Three Main UK Mantrailing & Scent Sport Frameworks
1. The Canine School of Trailing (TCSOT)
TCSOT offers one of the most comprehensive amateur mantrailing assessment frameworks in the UK, with five clearly defined levels, designed around:
Real‑world trailing scenarios
Environmental complexity
Ethical training methods
Dog welfare
Handler skill development
TCSOT assessments prioritise realistic problem solving, emotional regulation, scent ageing and operational-style challenges.
2. Mantrailing Global (MTG)
Mantrailing Global provides a structured three‑level progression system, widely recognised internationally. Their framework focuses on:
Formal benchmarking
Standardised assessment conditions
Measurable performance outcomes
This system appeals to handlers who enjoy clear structure, defined goals and formalised progression routes.
3. UK Scent Sport (UKSS)
UKSS operates a multi‑discipline scent sport framework, rather than mantrailing alone. Their training includes:
Trail ID (mantrailing)
Kong detection
Match to sample
Catnip retrieve
Their trailing assessments form part of a broader competitive scent sport system, ideal for handlers who enjoy variety, sport progression and league-style achievement.
